100% Combed Cotton, 267gsm. Plush weave.
I created it last year at a time we were having very mixed fortunes as a family; not long after we found out we were pregnant with our second child, we suffered the bereavement of a close family member dying. One thing that helped me through this was the wisdom of one of my friends, who said "When the life stream closes a door, it opens a window".
Accepting the duality of life and death as two complementary forces is something that many cultures acknowledge. One of my favourite philosophers is Alan Watts, who talks about this subject.
Anyhow, the imagery of skulls, whilst quite morbid for some, isn't always seen that way. Personally, I actually see them more as a symbol for our species, and don't really even associate them with death. I've heard that in Mexico, the Day of the Dead, which has a lot of skull imagery, is a celebration of Life, with flowery sugar skulls used to represent life and rebirth.
That is what I wished to create with this piece that incorporates a floral skull motif - a design to celebrate the beauty and fragility of life, and my acceptance last year that without one, we cannot have the joy of the other.
With all that said, I also think that skulls just look kinda cool..
